October is National Fire Prevention month. Here is list of 5 simple safety tips you can implement into your workplace in order to prevent fire and to keep you safe.

1. Get Organized

One of the ways to reduce fire related episodes is to remove clutter out of office hallways and anywhere else in the office. Clutter contributes to fires by providing fuel and by preventing access to exits and emergency equipment.

2. Electrical Hazards

Extension cords and power distribution strips are rated for a maximum wattage and amperage that they can safely withstand. Overloaded extension cords can cause a fire hazard.

3. Fire extinguishers

All businesses must have fire extinguishers. Maintain the appropriate type of extinguisher for your workplace and number of fire extinguishers and learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

4. Fire detection systems

Never block sprinklers, firefighting equipment or emergency exits. Observe clearances when stacking materials. Make sure these devices are protected from corrosion or other potential damage and provide enough warning time for employees to evacuate the workplace.

5. Hazardous chemical storage

Use and store chemicals safely. When storing chemicals, make sure to keep incompatible groups apart. Check the safety data sheets and the hazard labels for further information.

6. Emergency Exits

Emergency exit diagrams should be posted and emergency exits should be well lit with neon-regulation signs.
