11/15/2023 (Permalink)

Are you tired of battling mold in your home? Look no further than SERVPRO of Midland. Our expert team is here to help you identify mold sources, remove them effectively, and prevent future growth.

With our expertise in action, you can finally say goodbye to mold and hello to a healthier, mold-free environment. Trust SERVPRO of Midland to give you the belonging and peace of mind you deserve.

Identifying Mold Sources

To effectively combat mold, you must first identify its sources. Understanding where the mold originates is crucial to effectively eliminating and preventing its recurrence. Identifying mold sources can be daunting, but with proper guidance, you can easily take control and create a healthier living environment.

One common source of mold is water damage. Leaky pipes, roofs, or windows can create the perfect conditions for mold growth. If you notice any discoloration or dampness in your walls or ceilings, it's essential to address the issue promptly. Additionally, poor ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens can lead to excess moisture, which can contribute to mold growth. Regularly inspecting these areas and ensuring proper airflow can help prevent mold from taking hold.

Another potential source of mold is high humidity levels. Mold thrives in damp environments, so keeping your home's humidity in check is crucial. Dehumidifiers or air conditioners can help regulate humidity levels and discourage mold growth. Additionally, keeping your home well-ventilated by opening windows or using exhaust fans can help prevent moisture buildup.

Furthermore, mold can enter your home through contaminated furniture, carpets, or clothing. If you suspect these items are harboring mold, promptly addressing the issue is important. Cleaning or replacing these materials can help eliminate the source of mold and prevent its spread.

Effective Mold Removal Strategies

Get rid of mold effectively by implementing these proven strategies. Taking immediate action is essential when tackling mold to prevent further spread and potential health risks.

The first step is to identify the source of the mold, which we discussed in the previous subtopic. Once you've identified the source, it's time to implement effective removal strategies.

One of the most important strategies is to ensure proper ventilation in your home. Mold thrives in damp and humid environments, so opening windows and using fans can help reduce moisture levels and prevent mold growth. Additionally, using dehumidifiers in areas prone to dampness, such as basements or bathrooms, can help to keep moisture at bay.

Another effective strategy is to clean and dry any affected areas promptly. Mold can spread quickly, so it's crucial to act fast. Use a solution of water and detergent to scrub the affected surfaces thoroughly. After cleaning, dry the area completely to prevent moisture from lingering and promoting mold growth.

In some cases, removing and replacing materials severely affected by mold, such as drywall or carpeting, may be necessary. It's essential to wear protective gear, such as gloves and masks, to avoid inhaling mold spores during the removal process. It's also recommended to seal off the affected area to prevent cross-contamination to other parts of your home.

Lastly, addressing any underlying issues causing mold growth, such as leaks or excessive moisture, is crucial. Repairing leaks and improving ventilation can help to prevent future mold problems.

Preventing Future Mold Growth

To prevent future mold growth, you need to maintain proper ventilation and address any underlying moisture issues in your home. Mold thrives in damp and humid environments, so keeping the air flowing and moisture levels under control is crucial.

Start by ensuring that your home has good ventilation. Open windows and use fans to circulate air, especially in areas prone to moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen. Proper ventilation helps to remove excess moisture from the air, making it less favorable for mold growth.

In addition to ventilation, addressing any underlying moisture problems is necessary. Check for leaks in pipes, roofs, or windows and repair them promptly. If you notice any dampness or water damage, dry the affected area thoroughly and fix the source of the problem. Moisture provides the perfect breeding ground for mold, so eliminating it is critical to preventing future growth.

Furthermore, it's essential to control the humidity levels in your home. Use dehumidifiers in areas that tend to be more humid, such as basements or laundry rooms. Keep the humidity levels below 50% to discourage mold growth. Regularly clean and maintain your dehumidifier to ensure its effectiveness.

Lastly, be proactive in preventing mold growth by regularly inspecting your home for any signs of mold or moisture issues. Catching and addressing them early can save you time, money, and the hassle of dealing with a full-blown mold problem.

Our team of experts is here to help you prevent costly water damage and protect your property. With our proactive measures and top-notch restoration services, you can have peace of mind knowing that your property is in good hands.

Don't let water damage dampen your spirits. Trust SERVPRO of Midland for all your water damage prevention needs.

Understanding the Causes of Water Damage

To prevent water damage, you need to understand its causes. Water damage can be a costly and stressful experience, but by understanding what leads to it, you can take proactive steps to protect your home and belongings.

One of the leading causes of water damage is plumbing issues. Leaky pipes, burst pipes, and faulty plumbing fixtures can all result in significant water damage if left unattended. It's crucial to look for any signs of water leakage, such as dampness, discoloration, or mold growth, and address them promptly.

Another common cause of water damage is weather-related incidents. Heavy rainstorms, hurricanes, and flooding can all lead to water infiltrating your home. Ensuring that your roof is in good condition and that your gutters are clear of debris can help prevent water from seeping into your house during these events.

Additionally, improper drainage around your property can cause water to accumulate, leading to water damage. Checking that your yard slopes away from your home and that your downspouts are directed away from the foundation can help prevent water from pooling near your home.

Lastly, household appliances can also be a source of water damage. Dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters can all malfunction and cause leaks or flooding. Regular maintenance and inspections of these appliances can help identify potential issues before they become costly water damage incidents.

Proactive Measures for Water Damage Prevention

Take proactive measures to prevent water damage and safeguard your home and belongings.

As a homeowner who desires a sense of belonging and security, it's crucial to implement preventive measures to avoid costly water damage. By being proactive, you can save yourself from the stress, inconvenience, and financial burden of water damage restoration.

Start by regularly inspecting your home for any signs of water leaks or damage. Check your pipes, faucets, and water supply lines for any leaks or drips. Promptly repair any issues you find to prevent them from worsening and causing water damage.

Ensure that your gutters and downspouts are clean and in good working condition. Clear them of any debris, such as leaves and twigs, to prevent clogging and water overflow. Properly functioning gutters and downspouts will direct rainwater away from your home's foundation, reducing the risk of water seeping into your basement or crawl space.

Install a sump pump in your basement if you haven't already. A sump pump helps to prevent water accumulation in your basement by automatically pumping out excess water. It's beneficial during heavy rains or in areas prone to flooding.

Consider installing a water leak detection system. These systems use sensors to detect leaks and can send alerts to your smartphone or notify a monitoring service. Early detection of leaks can help you take immediate action and avoid extensive water damage.

Lastly, ensure that your home's exterior is properly sealed. Check for any cracks or gaps in your walls, windows, and doors, and seal them to prevent water infiltration.

Why SERVPRO is the First Choice for Water, Fire, Storm, and Mold Damage Restoration Needs

Rain and Fire Fire and Rain

Why Midland TX Residents can Act Decisively Against Storm, Mold, Fire or Water Damages

Midland residents use restoration services when unexpected home emergencies occur. By doing so, they can often save thousands of dollars in potential secondary damages that may occur as a result of improper or home restoration services. Our company has been a stalwart in the community of Midland for several years. It partakes in regular donations of both money and time to charity missions like clothing drives or children's shelters. Throughout the year, our servicemen and women are on-hand to help you overcome an emergency with minimum inconvenience and expense. Contact us anytime to arrange restoration services for water, mold, storm, or fire-related damages.

Water Damage Restoration

Homeowners may experience water damage in their Midlandhome at any time of year. These can be either in the form of excessive quantities of moisture in a short period overloading a home's defenses, or long-term problems creeping up over several months. Whether your Midland home falls victim to flooding or a slow internal leaking, our water restoration technicians (WRT) are on-hand to provide the assistance you need. SERVPRO is available twenty-four-hours a day and even runs an out-of-hours service for emergencies.

Water incidents in your property can cause a chain reaction of interrelated issues. These issues may include problems with odor, microbial bacteria, fungi, or soiling of your possessions. SERVPRO restoration services are comprehensive in their approach to your Midland home and can stop damage as well as putting in place proven methods to reverse it. Usually, we start by thoroughly removing water from the property, then drying using proper drying methods.

Bringing venting box fans to your Midland home, as well as the careful placement of portable heating, can help to encourage natural evaporation. Natural evaporation is useful in removing moisture that may have absorbed into furnishings, upholstery, or flooring. Using moisture probes, SERVPRO can accurately assess the moisture content of any given material and can keep returning during the restoration service to ensure reaching our goals.

Mold Remediation

Indoor air quality is becoming increasingly prominent in the restoration service industry. Often, homeowners are surprised by quite how many toxins can exist in a home environment. The issue is especially pertinent in homeowners that have Midland homes. Molds breed by releasing microscopic spores into the surrounding atmosphere. These spores can cause unpleasant odors as well as ingestion when inhaling indoor air. SERVPRO takes decisive action during mold remediation to ensure the spread is limited and your air-quality restored.

Setting up containment is an essential part of the restoration. Usually, an area of your Midland home that shows evidence of mold growth needs quarantining. The removal of mold colonies or demolition of infested materials increases airborne spores. SERVPRO applies negative air pressure when performing controlled demolitions to ensure that the spread of spores is under control. Also, we may use physical barriers such as polyurethane sheeting to prevent microscopic spores from escaping.

Airborne particles are frequently invisible to the naked eye. This invisibility makes it challenging for a homeowner to assess or act against unwanted indoor air particles. Using high-efficiency particulate air-filters (HEPA), SERVPRO technicians can remove particles from the air that are as small as 0.3 microns. Air scrubbing equipment combined with deodorizing methods saves time on the turnaround of your restoration service.

Storm Damage Restoration

Storms can expose your home to outdoor elements as well as pathogens that may enter in floodwaters. Extraction is the most effective method of controlling storm damage in your Midland home. However, to be truly useful, you need to combine rapid extraction with careful cleaning and drying. At SERVPRO, we often find homeowners suffering from microbial growth or mold issues traced back to initial flooding several weeks or months before.

Our restoration services focus on a complete, thorough approach to both removal and drying of moisture in your Midland home. When water is extracted and dried, it can leave behind microbes or stain on the flooring materials of your home. We use rotary floor machines to both loosen soiling from hard surfaces and apply pre-conditioning agents to soft ones like carpets. Rotary machines not only help to dislodge severe soiling but can help to buffer floors and leave them in a preloss condition.

Flooding as a result of stormy conditions can seem unfair. SERVPRO can help you to redress the balance by providing expert, Midland-based technicians who can complete the job on time and on-budget. If the damage necessitates relocation temporarily, we can perform the vital mitigation tasks needed to prevent your home from suffering permanent damage in the interim period. SERVPRO restoration services are available to all residents of Midland in an emergency.

Fire Damage Restoration

If your heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system are on, it can cause extensive fire damage toyour Midland home. Air entering the supply side can overload filters causing hot smokes to travel through ventilation shafts. Return side outlets can then end up spewing soots, odor, and ash into unaffected regions of the house. SERVPRO restoration services incorporate a comprehensive game plan for HVAC inspection, cleaning, and replacement of ventilation ducts.

Hot smokes are attracted to cooler surfaces, which include the metal insides of a ventilation shaft. These can deposit thick soiling onto the inner sides of an HVAC system, which can be challenging and technical to clean. SERVPRO restoration services here in Midland can remove both return and supply-side air ducts to carry out in-depth inspections. Using air whips, we can dislodge loose soiling, which can then vacuum out using negative air pressure machines. Cleaning of the interior closest to the wall- where soiling builds up- can be cleaned using water and oil-based solvents.

Once your HVAC is clean, we can begin to perform repairs. Cavities opened with a circular drill for negative air pressure machine access can be resealed using aluminum plating. We can replace ducts in every room inexpensively. Return side ventilation filters need replacing to ensure that odor remains under control, and your home brought to a preloss condition.

Home emergencies are unexpected and, at times, seem unfair. Contact SERVPRO of Midland TX at (432) 620-0086 for assistance with mold, storm, fire, or water-related incidents

Exit Plan

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Escape Have an escape route clearly marked and run safety checks to allow new employees to learn them.

If you are a building owner with tenants or a property manager, you should always have an exit plan in case of a serious fire or water damage in the building. Part of the plan should be multiple exits for all occupants of the building and a meeting spot for each group of people. There should never be a question when an emergency arises where people should go and what to do. It is very important to have your occupants, staff or visiting persons apprised of this information and is prepared. The details of these plans should be both a visual drawing and written directions. If you are able to, the building should have arrows marked on all areas where the exit plan is activated. For example, take a look at the photo. Never forget, SERVPRO is always here to help in case of an emergency in your commercial building.

PREVENT WORKPLACE FIRE

October is National Fire Prevention month. Here is list of 5 simple safety tips you can implement into your workplace in order to prevent fire and to keep you safe.

  1. Get Organized

One of the ways to reduce fire related episodes is to remove clutter out of office hallways and anywhere else in the office. Clutter contributes to fires by providing fuel and by preventing access to exits and emergency equipment.

  1. Electrical Hazards

Extension cords and power distribution strips are rated for a maximum wattage and amperage that they can safely withstand. Overloaded extension cords can cause a fire hazard.

  1. Fire extinguishers

All businesses must have fire extinguishers. Maintain the appropriate type of extinguisher for your workplace and number of fire extinguishers and learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

  1. Fire detection systems

Never block sprinklers, firefighting equipment or emergency exits. Observe clearances when stacking materials. Make sure these devices are protected from corrosion or other potential damage and provide enough warning time for employees to evacuate the workplace.

  1. Hazardous chemical storage

Use and store chemicals safely. When storing chemicals, make sure to keep incompatible groups apart. Check the safety data sheets and the hazard labels for further information.

  1. Emergency Exits

Emergency exit diagrams should be posted and emergency exits should be well lit with neon-regulation signs.

No matter the size or type of business, the risk of workplace fires is present. By following these tips, it will help protect your workplace and reduce the risk of injuries. If there is a fire-related emergency in your workplace, our expert fire restoration team can assist you in restoring your business quickly.

Workplace Water Damage

Business Water Water in the Business

When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down businesses for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms.

However, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Midland will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at (432) 620-0086 for fast help.

Heat Stress

8/11/2020 (Permalink)

heat stress heat

On average, heat is the number one weather related killer in the United States.

Source: National Weather Service, nws.noaa.gov

As summer approaches, it is time to consider safety precautions for extreme heat in the coming months. Heat affects all people, but especially the young, elderly, sick, and overweight. Urban area residents also have a greater chance of being affected than those who live in rural areas due to the heat island effect.

According to the EPA, “the sun can heat dry, exposed urban surfaces, such as roofs and pavement, to temperatures 50–90°F hotter than the air, while shaded or moist surfaces—often in more rural surroundings—remain close to air temperatures.” These surface heat islands are strongest during the day when the sun is shining, while the atmospheric heat islands are more likely after sunset “due to the slow release of heat from urban infrastructure.”

Whether you are in an urban or rural area, there are several things you can do to prepare for and prevent extreme heat from affecting you. If possible, stay indoors in air conditioning. Be sure to check on your pets who may be outdoors or bring them inside. Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

If you must go outside, wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing, and be sure to apply sunscreen often. Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, which are heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; nausea or vomiting; and fainting, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is life-threatening. Signs of heat stroke are a high body temperature (103°+), rapid and strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness.

If you think someone has heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move the person somewhere cool. Reduce body temperature with cool, wet cloths or a bath. Do not give a person with heat stroke fluids, and treat the situation as a serious medical emergency (CDC). If you live in a humid climate, be aware of the heat index. The heat index factors in the humidity, which can make the temperature feel 15° hotter.

Extreme heat is a serious danger. For more information on preparation and prevention, visit ready.gov or cdc.gov.

Covid-19 Cleanup

These procedures focus on the critical role cleaning plays in preventing the transmission of viruses, such as Coronavirus. Cleanup procedures may vary depending on the environment, but the general guideline includes [1] disinfectant selection, [2] cleaning and sanitizing of porous and non-porous surfaces, [3] disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, [4] cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, [5] post clean up evaluation, and [6] disposal of waste.

1. Disinfectant Selection

The CDC recommends usage of a disinfectant with the EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claim. As of the date of this publication, there are no disinfectants that have been tested specifically for use against novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the Cause of COVID-19. However, disinfectant manufacturers (including SERVPRO) are working with the EPA to have the emerging viral pathogen claim added to existing products that are designed to kill viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2.

2. Cleaning and Sanitizing of Porous and Non-porous Surfaces

The CDC describes cleaning as removing germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using a detergent and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.xx
Some materials cannot be cleaned with detergent and water without being damaged. For this reason, paper and paper products are not able to be cleaned and/or disinfected. Cleaning methods typically used on water sensitive materials such as vacuuming or dry sponging would not be capable of removing enough soil and residue to be effective.
For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, remove visible contamination if present and clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces.xxi Surfaces that are not water sensitive, can be wet cleaned using a Hot Water Extraction or Deluxe Pre-conditioner and Rinse method. Upholstered items and carpets can be sanitized with certain disinfectants.
Affected laundry/linen items should be minimally handled. If the items can be laundered, SERVPRO of Midland Texas will launder items in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and then dry items completely. Otherwise, SERVPRO will use products with the EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claims that are suitable for porous surfaces.xxii

• SERVPRO of Midland Texas will wash items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and if possible, will launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely. Dirty laundry that has been in contact with an ill person can be washed with other people’s items.xxiv

• SERVPRO of Midland Texas will clean and disinfect hampers or other carts for transporting laundry according to the guidance above for hard or soft surfaces.xxv

Non-porous materials like hard surface floors, cabinets, countertops, doorknobs, and plumbing fixtures can be wet cleaned using a variety of SERVPRO hard surface cleaners (general-purpose cleaners) and cleaning methods. All cleaning procedures will be performed in such a manner as to minimize the splashing, spraying, spattering, falling, aerosolization, cross-contamination, migration, and generation of infectious material. We will avoid cleaning techniques such as pressurized air or water sprays, which may generate droplets or bio-aerosols.

3. Disinfecting of Non-porous Surfaces

The CDC describes disinfecting as killing germs on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or objects. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.xxvi
The application method should be selected based on surface type, location of surface, amount of surface area, and manufacturer recommended application method. Disinfectants can be applied using a saturated towel, spray bottle, pump-up sprayer, electric sprayer, ULV Mister, or electrostatic sprayer. SERVPRO of St. Augustine follows label directions for application and maintaining wet contact or dwell time as indicated by the manufacturer, which is critical.
Our technicians will be careful to prevent the over-wetting of electronic items, such as phones and computers to prevent potential damage.

4. Cleaning and Disinfecting of Equipment, Tools, and/or Supplies Used for Cleanup Process

Any equipment, tools, and/or supplies used by SERVPRO of Midland Texas for the cleanup process will be cleaned and disinfected using the cleaning methods described in steps 1 and 2. This is to ensure that potential contamination is not moved to other parts of the structure.

5. Post Clean Up Evaluation

At the time of this publication, there is no available surface test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. There is currently no way to measure the effectiveness of the disinfection of SARS-CoV-2.

6. Disposal of Waste

SERVPRO of Midland Texas will follow all applicable federal, state, provincial, and municipal laws regarding the packaging, transportation, and disposal of medical waste. All disposable PPE (i.e. gloves, disposable respirators, coveralls), cleaning towels, and other waste will be bagged and sealed within the work area.

Covid-19

8/8/2020 (Permalink)

As states are beginning to reopen and lift some of the restrictions set in place for the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses are assessing how and when they’re going to reopen. Many are tasked with not only navigating the guidelines set forth by their state but are also working to establish an entirely new way of doing business. Regardless of industry, every business in America has had to make difficult but necessary decisions to develop a strategic plan of action for reopening.

For some, it’s allowing employees to continue to work from home for the remainder of the year. For others, it’s implementing a phased approach of reintroducing both employees and customers to their business environment. For all, a plan that involves a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation is of the utmost importance. Transparency and clear communication of reopening plans, both internally and externally, is proving to be critical for success and support during these trying times.

SERVPRO recently surveyed business owners and upper-level managers who work for organizations with 500+ employees. The questions covered how they are keeping their work environment clean and their employees and customers safe.

It’s clear that most businesses are listening to the CDC guidelines and recommendations and placing a higher emphasis on cleanliness and sanitation—for not only their employees to feel safe, but for the safety of their customers as well. These actions and higher standards are becoming the new norm in nearly every industry worldwide and will pave the way for the future of hygienic standards in business overall.

The Rising Waters: Toilet Overflow and What To Do About It

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

Sewer damage in Midland, TX  can be incredibly problematic, and quickly getting the situation under control is often imperative. You should know what can cause a flooded toilet and what you should do after it occurs to quickly clean up and restore your home to its natural state.

Understanding Why Toilet Overflow Occurs

Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon issue in homes. However, when you know what the potential causes are, it puts you in a position to take better preventative measures. The following may cause toilet overflow in your home:

• A drain line becomes clogged.
• The septic field is not percolating.
• Sewer damage occurs somewhere in the system’s lines due to issues such as tree roots or foreign objects causing a clog.
• A low flow toilet is not able to handle the demands of your household.
• The trap between the drain line and the toilet bowl becomes blocked.

Cleaning Up Toilet Overflow

The first step is to get rid of any water that may have accumulated in the affected space. Once this is gone, use low-suds soap and warm water to thoroughly clean all elements of the space. Once this is done, use a disinfectant and go over all of the surfaces you have cleaned to reduce any lingering contaminants and impurities.

Once you complete the cleanup process, make sure that you are taking steps to prevent this problem from recurring. Be mindful of how much toilet paper you are using, never flush feminine hygiene products and make sure that small objects do not accidentally get into your toilet and flushed down.

With this information about toilet overflow, you can be better prepared to deal with this type of situation. Should you experience sewer damage, it is generally a good idea to reach out to a sewage company to ensure that the restoration process is done safely and correctly.

5 Tips To Prevent Water Damage From Drain Clogs

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

More water damage insurance claims are filed for pipe breaks and plumbing or appliance issues than weather-related causes. Most plumbing failures in the kitchen and the bathroom are easily prevented. If a clog causes a backup and it is not caught right away, the resulting water damage can lead to warped hardwood floors, popping tiles, and wet moldy building materials. Prevent clogs, backups, and pipe breaks by following these easy tips to keep things flowing!

  • Cooking grease can wreak havoc on your pipes. Dispose of grease properly- never down the drain. Line a bowl with aluminum foil, and when the grease hardens you can just ball it up and throw it away! Another option is to use an old coffee can to dispose of the grease or re-purpose the leftover grease.
  • Chemical clog removal products can corrode your pipes over time. It's best to use natural clog removal methods such as baking soda or vinegar.
  • Keep the toilet drains clear by avoiding flushing products like feminine hygiene products and moist "flush-able" wipes.
  • Use a drain guard or screen in the shower to catch hair. Avoid using oily or greasy body care products that can gum up the pipes.
  • Always run cold water in a garbage disposal before adding food. Avoid tossing stringy or high fiber foods that are difficult to break down. Examples are carrots, potato peels, corn on the cob and celery.

Hopefully, these tips will help make your kitchen and bathroom maintenance easier.

Following these simple tips are the first defense in preventing water damage from a clogged or broken pipe. If your home or business encounters water damage, call SERVPRO of Midland immediately at 432-620-0086. Our professionals have the expertise to reverse and prevent the effects of flooding and water damage.

Midland, TX Fire Damage- How long do you have to escape a house fire

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

Everyone knows not to dawdle if their house is on fire, but you may believe you have some time to make a safe exit. Well, think again.

In this video, Gail McGovern, the president of the Red Cross reveals that you only have two (just two!) minutes to get out of your home before you might get stuck in the flames. This is because it only takes about five minutes for a fire to consume your entire house. And with one in seven people dying in a house fire each day, there's little room for error.

Practicing fire safety certainly requires vigilance, but it doesn't take too much effort to avoid a tragedy. First, make sure you have smoke alarms in your home (5 million American homes don't). You need one in every bedroom, one outside every sleeping area, and at least one on every floor. Make sure the detectors are working and refresh their batteries when you change the clocks for the beginning and end of Daylight Saving Time.

Also, it's important to practice fire drills with your family (get the Red Cross' guidelines here). You should go over possible routes to get out of your house fast, and consider getting escape ladders for any rooms on upper floors. Choose a meeting place outside that's a safe distance from your home.

And of course, you should take steps to prevent fires from happening in the first place. Watch the video to learn which common mistakes you might be making.

How to Effectively Inspect a Fire Extinguisher

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

Home Safety: How to Inspect a Fire Extinguisher

When was the last time you took time to check the fire extinguisher that sits under your kitchen sink? Or the one hanging from a dusty hook in your garage? If you’re struggling to remember, it’s time to check it. Like any other piece of safety equipment, a home fire extinguisher should be inspected regularly to ensure it’s in proper working condition. A fire extinguisher in good working condition is your first line of defense when a home fire erupts.

Ideally, you should inspect your portable home fire extinguishers every month.

Tips for Performing a Monthly Fire Extinguisher Check

Check the label or tag.

Every fire extinguisher, whether disposable or rechargeable, has a manufacturer’s label or tag. Read the tag and follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance suggestions.

Check the tamper seal.

If the tamper seal has been broken or is cracked, a disposable fire extinguisher needs to be replaced. If it’s rechargeable, it needs to be serviced professionally. Check the locking or pull pin as well to make sure it’s in the correct position. If the pin missing, the fire extinguisher needs to be inspected or serviced by a professional.

Inspect for physical damage.

Physically inspect the fire extinguisher for obvious damage. This may include but is not limited to dents, corrosion, cracks and obvious leakage. If a fire extinguisher has leakage, it’s no longer under full pressure and may not work properly when you need it most. Check the fire extinguisher nozzle as well, to ensure it’s not clogged by grime, dust, bugs or leakage from the unit itself.

Check the pressure gauge.

Check that the pressure gauge needle indicates the fire extinguisher pressure is in the optimum operating range. Often the correct pressure range will be designated by green on the gauge.

Is the fire extinguisher full?

During your monthly check, lift the fire extinguisher and determine if it still feels full. If there has been a leak, it will feel light, and it won’t have the right amount of pressure to work correctly.

Shake it.

If you have a dry chemical fire extinguisher, it should be shaken once a month during your inspection. This helps prevent the chemical dousing agent from solidifying at the bottom of the unit.

Write inspection date on tag.

Keep track of every inspection date by writing it on the fire extinguisher tag.

Ensure easy access to your fire extinguisher.

Fire extinguishers should always be easy to access if there is an emergency. You don’t want to have to search for it once a fire breaks out. Don’t block fire extinguishers with furniture, boxes or any other items. Everyone who lives in the household should know where the closest fire extinguisher is located and how to use it in case of an emergency.

In the event of a fire emergency, first make sure to get people safely away, then call 911. A home fire extinguisher can be used to put out or control small fires, but it’s still safest to call professional fire fighters before you attempt to control a fire on your own. If you need professional fire, smoke and water damage cleanup and remediation after a fire, call the experts at SERVPRO of Midland, TX.

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

When there is water in your home, mold can quickly become an issue. It can cause health issues and damage to your property. SERVPRO of Midland, TX has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment to handle your mold problem.

Call SERVPRO of Midland, TX

Assessment
Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Containment
Different containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold, like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration
Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO of Midland, TX technicians use powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.

Removing
The process of mold remediation depends on the amount of mold growth and the type of surface it's on. Anti-fungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new ones from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary.

Cleaning
SERVPRO of Midland, TX cleans your furniture, decorative items, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings.

Mold Remediation in Your Midland, TX Home or Business?

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Midland, TX offers mold remediation and restoration; we have the training, equipment and expertise to better assist you.

It is preferred that you have an Industrial Hygienist protocol (mold test) done before the work begins?

This is a process where air sampling and affected areas are tested to provide a detailed remediation and restoration protocol for SERVPRO of Midland, TX to follow. There is also a post-test that will take place once we are finished to confirm clearance.

Every time our team handles a mold job, we are required to wear the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which includes items such as coveralls and respirators.

SERVPRO of Midland, TX will make sure to keep anything deemed salvageable; we go above and beyond to ensure restoration before removal.  Unfortunately, in most situations there is some tear out involved to remove affected areas such as drywall, flooring, and/or furniture.

During the mold remediation process a HEPA vacuum is used, HEPA filters are designed to capture particles as small as mold spores and to ensure that they do not get reintroduced. Our mold experts use “negative air” containment, which is created by positioning negative air machines to introduce clean air into the affected area and push contaminated air outside the home.

You want to consider getting your HVAC cleaned as well, the mold spores can collect there and be dispersed throughout the home.

Every mold infestation is different, from the amount of mold to the types of materials affected. Each scenario requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.

What to Do After a Flood in your Midland, TX business or home?

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

Storms can cause severe damage to your home—potentially even making them unsafe! SERVPRO is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for catastrophic storm response, and you can call us at (432) 620-0086 to get immediate help.

What You Should Do After a Flood

Even if you were properly prepared for the flood and weathered the storm until it passed, your home could still have sustained heavy damage. Now that the sky is blue once more, how do you proceed? Here’s a look at what to do after a flood:

Be Cautious

Just because the sun is shining, and the flood waters have receded, that doesn’t mean all danger has passed. Exercise caution by doing the following:

  • Tune into local alerts and warning systems to stay up-to-date with current information and receive expert, informed advice about the flood. After all, additional flooding could still occur.
  • Stay away from rushing water. Moving water only 6 inches deep can sweep you off your feet.
  • Avoid walking through large areas of standing water, which may be electrically charged by downed power lines. The water could also be hiding broken glass or dangerous animals.
  • Unless you are specifically asked for help by the police, fire department, or relief workers, keep out of damaged areas.
  • Help emergency workers by staying off the roads in and out of the damaged neighborhood or region.
  • If you’re caught in a stalled car during a flash flood, abandon the car and get to higher ground immediately.
  • Heed barricades and find an alternate route if you encounter one blocking your way. Crossing bridges even after the water has receded could be dangerous if the structural integrity has been jeopardized.
  • Return home only when the authorities permit it. Even then, stay out of the building if it’s surrounded by flood waters and exercise extreme caution when you do enter.

Stay Safe and Healthy

Take care of you and your family as cleanup efforts begin. To stay safe and healthy, remember the following:

  • Turn off the home’s electricity at the main breaker box, even if the power is out. Only turn the power on when your home is dry.
  • Avoid floodwater, which may be contaminated with sewage, gasoline, or oil.
  • Fix damaged sewer systems as soon as possible.
  • Don’t drink water from the tap. Listen to news reports to learn when the community’s water is safe to drink again.

Clean and Repair Your Home

  • Use the information in the Repairing Your Flooded Home PDF from the Red Cross to learn how to enter your home safely, protect your belongings from future damage, record damage for insurance claims, check for gas leaks, and begin the cleanup process.
  • Contact your insurance agent to discuss your claim.
  • Hire a professional water damage mitigation company as soon as possible. It’s important that the company is qualified for the services you need. SERPVRO of Midland, TX is available 24/7 to help when you need it most. Not only are we a local command center, but we also have the resources of 1,600 franchises nationwide—meaning no disaster is too big.

What's the Difference?

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

What is the difference between a Flood Watch and a Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service?

  • Flash Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood prone area move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.
  • Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.
  • Flood Watch: Be Prepared: A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.
  • Flood Advisory: Be Aware: An Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning. However, it may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property.

Mold Facts

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours!

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to re-mediate your mold infestation.

Time To Turn On Those Dehumidifiers

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

With our crazy West Texas Weather starting in full swing, it is not hard to feel the humidity lurking in the air. The thick feeling heat is bad enough to deal with outside your home, but when it starts affecting the inside it's almost unbearable. It's time to drag out those dehumidifiers that have been hiding in the corners of your basements and get them started up. Here are some ways dehumidifiers can positively affect your living environment.

They Keep Mold At Bay
Dehumidifiers remove the thick moisture from the air and make your home a more comfortable place to live. Removing this excess moisture can also keep the pesky mold spores that are always lurking in the air from attaching to your walls and furniture. Typically, mold is able to grow and spread when the humidity level is above 60%. When a dehumidifier is set up and running to remove enough moisture to keep the humidity level below 50-60%, the mold spores are unable to grow and spread. This is why it is important to keep those dehumidifiers running in the hot, thick summer months.

They Provide Relief From Various Allergies
Dehumidifiers work to rid of humidity in the air, but by doing this they also kill germs and blow out the dust particles that linger in the air, purifying the air within your home. This can help minimize the allergies an individual is affected by even within their home.

They Help Keep Your Home Cool
With the help of a dehumidifier, you may be able to turn down your air conditioning, saving you energy costs. By getting rid of the moisture in the air, your home will instantly feel cooler and more comfortable.

Flood Damage in Your Home

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

With this flood damage check list you can begin to restore your home

Finding flood damage in your home can create quite a bit of stress; after all, no one likes discovering that their living room has been turned into a water recreation facility. As a result, many homeowners are likely to panic and make poor choices in the hours that follow. You can avoid these mistakes by following the flood damage checklist below:

Ensure your safety

Once you see a flood of water in your basement, it may be tempting to go charging right in, but this is generally a bad idea. First, you need to ensure that you're safe. If the power is still on, you could be electrocuted. Additionally, sewage will make you ill, and the water from flood damage can conceal sharp objects to cut yourself on.

Shut off the water source

Now that you know you’re safe, next you need to ensure that the source of the water has been taken care of. Sometimes, this is as simple as turning off a water supply valve. However, more complex problems, like a flooded sewer line, could actually take a few hours. It's a good idea to call the appropriate professional, like a plumber, right away to give them time to start driving out to your flood damaged property.

Call your insurance

Sure, it's tempting to have your first call be to a flood damage clean-up professional, but there's a chance that your insurance doesn't contract out with them. Instead, it's better to have your insurance's claim number programmed into your phone. Call them, report the flood damage, and then call a professional they contract out with.

Call a clean-up crew

Most flood damage clean-up  projects are just too large for you to tackle by yourself. Besides, depending on where you live, you'll likely have mold to clean up afterwards as well. Any money spent on a flood damage clean-up crew will likely be well worth it.

Take pictures and document damage

Your insurance policy will need proof of flood damage if they are going to write you a check. When you're on the phone with your insurance company and the clean-up crew, take photos of the flood damage. Make sure to get detailed photos of valuable items.

If you've planned well, you'll also have pictures of your home in an undamaged state. This lets you prove the state that your house and items were in before the disaster.

Remove what can be saved

Once you've ensured that the area is safe, you have help on the way, and you've thoroughly documented the flood damage, you can begin to remove items out of the area. A word of caution: water is extremely heavy. Any water soaked items will weigh a lot more than you expect. Please, be careful not to injure yourself.

Begin the remediation process

This is where professionals will come in handy. During the remediation process, all excess water will need to be removed, the humidity will need to be brought down to an appropriate level, mold prevention steps will need to be taken, and damaged drywall or flooring will need to be replaced. All of this is a lot of work for one person, so please get professional help.

SERVPRO of Midland is locally owned and operated and serves the surrounding areas.

SERVPRO of Midland is fully certified. The water removal staff can perform a complete flood damage assessment to your home of office, and then recommend and follow the industries standards to get your water removal restoration repaired properly available 24 hours a day.

SERVPRO of Midland is a 24/7 emergency water removal & flood damage clean up repair service company. Equipment for water damage

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO'S well-equipped equipment

SERVPRO knows that staying on the cutting edge of technology in our industry will help our customers the most. That's why we add new equipment to our inventory on a regular basis. We are proud to be able to offer the best to our customers.

Many homeowners feel that if the water is removed, the work of water damage cleanup is done. This is because it is difficult to see or feel the extent of the saturation of water in building materials without moisture detection equipment used in the water damage industry. What follows is that either the homeowner will attempt to remove the water and simply place household fans around, with or without removing drywall; or they will tell the water damage restoration contractor to leave when the water is extracted and before equipment is placed. The paradox here is that these decisions are made to save time and money. In some cases, they may have done just that. However, in most cases, the resulting long term water damage is both costly and time consuming in addition to being inconvenient and stressful. Added to that is the fact that the cost of mold remediation consequent of an improperly dried flood damage will likely not be covered by insurance policies because the water damage or sewage damage was not dried properly to begin with.

You have probably noticed by now that it is not the water removal service that is the important part of taking care of water damage. It is actually the drying part that makes your home safe from long term mold or building material damage. In fact, there is no time to waste when it comes to drying a water damaged home. Mold begins to start growing within 24 hours and continues “growing like a weed” damaging building materials as it spreads.

Water damage restoration companies spend a tremendous amount of money on drying equipment for a very good reason. They dry quickly, effectively, and safely. After all, think about it, if we could just use household fans and a couple of blowers, we would save a tremendous amount of money on equipment. If I thought those types of equipment did an effective job, I would be all over saving money by purchasing those at less than $50 each rather than a $300-400 blower and $3000 dehumidifiers. However, I know the importance of having industrial equipment to keep your home safe and dry. Further, all of the equipment works together to both dry the structural materials (blowers), remove the moisture from the air as the wet materials dry and the water from them turns to vapor (dehumidifiers), and clean the air to prevent allergens that permeate through the air during drying (air scrubbers).

Tips for mold prevention

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

contaminated growth on an interior wall inside the home

Mold is a common household problem, developing in warm, damp environments. Mold can be colored green, purple, white, and orange. While mold plays an important role outside in the environment, breaking down dead plants, mold is unwelcome in homes.

Showers and bathrooms are a common location for mold to grow, but it is possible for mold to grow anywhere in a home. Mold can come inside a home from an outside growth through inadequately sealed windows or doors. Mold spores cannot be eliminated entirely, but they will not grow if the environment is dry and well ventilated. Mold growth can be prevented by ensuring if water damage occurs, clean up occurs quickly. Using air conditioners during humid seasons and exhaust fans in kitchen can help prevent mold from growing.

Other areas to monitor moisture to prevent mold growth: exterior walls and surfaces in need of insulation where condensation can build, air conditioner drip pans, check for leaks around refrigerator, ensure crawl spaces are well ventilated, and check for leaks around a tub.

These are a few simple tips for making sure mold is not growing in your home. If you do discover a mold growth, SERVPRO of Midland, TX provides mold remediation services for all types of residential and commercial properties.

Work Place Water Damage is Restored by SERVPRO

Holiday Fires

12/1/2018 (Permalink)

Decorations on fire

This holiday season, make sure that the glow in your home's decorations is from twinkling lights and not from a costly and potentially deadly fire. SERVPRO of Midland cautions Midland County home owners to follow some of these American Red Cross (ARC) guidelines for holiday decorating and entertaining.

  • Place Christmas trees and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents, and candles.

  • Purchase flame-retardant metallic or artificial trees. If you purchase a real tree, make sure that it has fresh, green needles that aren't easily broken. Keep live trees as moist a possible by giving them plenty of water.

  • Make sure that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

  • If you are celebrating Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, keep flammable items, including curtains and holiday decorations, at least three feet away from your candles. Place your menorah or kinara on a non-flammable surface, such as a tray lined with aluminum foil, to catch the melting candles wax. Never leave lit candles unattended.

  • Ensure all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave and always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.

We at SERVPRO of Midland knows that even the most diligent fire prevention planning can't prevent all home fires. That's why fire safety planning, like installing and maintaining smoke detectors and having a family escape plan, is also important. If a fire does break out in your home this holiday season, make sure all your family members follow this lifesaving advice from the ARC: Get Out, Stay Out, and Call for Help.

SERVPRO of Midland, TX is available 24/7 to assist you in a fire emergency. Call 432-620-0086.

Tornadoes

12/1/2018 (Permalink)

Tornado

With these storms we've had lately, it's always good to know what to do in case there is a tornado around you.

4 Tip below on what to do if there is a Tornado warning in your area!

1. Figure out a safe place to ride out the storm

Do you live in a mobile home? If so, get somewhere safer. Driving in a car? Get home as quickly as you can, and if that's not possible, get to a sturdy building and take shelter.

2. Get away from windows

Regardless of where you're hunkering down, it should be as far away from windows as possible.

3. If a tornado appears while you're on the road...

You should make every effort to find a safe building for shelter. If you can't find one, NEVER hide under an overpass. Instead, find a ditch, get down and cover your head.

4. Don't leave your home and try to drive away from a tornado

Tornadoes can shift their path, and even if you think you're directly in the line of the storm, being inside shelter is safer than being inside a car.

Cooking that Turkey

Cooking a Turkey

As you gather to celebrate the Holidays with your friends and family, at SERVPRO we want to help keep you and your loved ones safe from fire hazards.

According to data from the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA,  an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings occur annually in the United States, resulting in an estimated average of five deaths, 25 injuries, and $21 million in property loss each year. The leading cause of all Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings is cooking.

The USFA recommends the following tips to keep your holiday safe.

  • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them if they are 10 years old or older.
  • Keep a close watch on your cooking. You should never leave cooking food unattended.
  • Keep oven food packaging and other combustibles away from burners and heat sources.
  • Heat cooking oil slowly and watch it closely; it can ignite quickly.
  • Don't wear loose sleeves while working over hot stove burners - they can melt, ignite or catch on handles of pots and pans spilling hot oil and other liquids.
  • Have a "kid-free zone" of at least three-feet around the stove and areas where hot foods or drinks are prepared or carried.
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.

Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without the turkey.  And deep-fried turkey has become a favorite Thanksgiving tradition in many households.  But if used improperly, an overloaded fryer can easily tip over and set an entire house ablaze.  USFA offers the following helpful tips to backyard chefs who plan to deep-fry a turkey for Thanksgiving:

  • Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors a safe distance from buildings and any other flammable materials.
  • Never use turkey fryers in a garage or on a wooden deck.
  • Make sure the fryers are used on a flat surface to reduce accidental tipping.
  • Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. If you do not watch the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.
  • Never let children or pets near the fryer even if it is not in use. The oil inside the cooking pot can remain dangerously hot hours after use.
  • To avoid oil spillover, do not overfill the fryer.
  • Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles. If possible, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from oil splatter.
  • Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and be careful with marinades. Oil and water do not mix, and water causes oil to spill over causing a fire or even an explosion hazard.
  • The National Turkey Federation (NTF) recommends thawing the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every five pounds in weight.
  • Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire. If the fire is manageable, use your all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire increases, immediately call the fire department for help.

Christmas Trees

Christmas Trees and lights

According to NFPA.org, between 2011 and 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 200 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires caused an average of 6 deaths, 16 injuries, and $14.8 million in direct property damage annually. We want to help you avoid house fires!

Tips to Avoid Christmas Tree fires

Picking the tree

Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

Placing the tree

  • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2" from the base of the trunk.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source (like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights).
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit!
  • Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.

Lighting the tree

  • Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer's instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

After Christmas

Why you should get rid of the tree after Christmas:
Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home.
Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards. Doing this also helps your Christmas light last longer.

Frozen Pipes

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

When the pipes freeze

Pipes can freeze and eventually burst in below freezing temperatures. Water has a unique property of expanding as it freezes causing pipes to crack and then burst. The ensuing rush of water can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.  SERVPRO of Midland TX is faster to any size disaster, bringing the latest equipment and training to help make your water damage "Like it never even happened."

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Take a few simple steps now to prevent suffering and grief down the road.

  • Inspect outdoor faucets. Now.  Find the indoor shut off valve for the outdoor faucet in basement or crawl space and shut it off. Then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it relieves pressure and drains completely.
  • Second, make sure that your heating system is checked regularly. Also, inspect the insulation on all of your plumbing as well as your cold water tank. Units located in the attic and other vulnerable locations should be protected with insulated sleeves.
  • During severe cold snaps, open cabinets where pipes are located so warm air can circulate.
  • Third, keep your heat on throughout the winter months. During harsh, cold months, the chances of your pipes freezing get greater as the temperature plummets.
  • Clean your gutters so melting snow and ice can flow freely
  • Turn on your faucets and allow them to drip slowly. Moving water will prevent freezing.
  • Open cabinet doors below sinks. It will help allow warm air to circulate.
  • Drain your water system if you’re away for an extended time.
  • Disconnect all gardening hoses and install covers on all outside faucets.
  • Wrap pipes nearest exterior walls and in crawl spaces with pipe insulation or with heating tape.
  • Close all windows near water pipes; cover or close open-air vents. Freezing temperatures combined with wind drafts can cause pipes to freeze more frequently.
  • Heat your basement and consider weather sealing your windows.
  • Insulate outside walls and unheated areas of your home.
  • Identify the location of the main water valve. SERVPRO of Midland TEXAS can

Monitor Freezing Pipe Conditions

  • Allow a faucet to drip slightly (lukewarm water) in order to minimize freezing.
  • The first sign of freezing is reduced water flow from a faucet.
  • Check your faucets for water flow and pressure before you go to sleep and again when you wake up.
  • Check pipes around your water meter, in unheated areas, near exterior walls and in crawl spaces.
  • Identify cold air drafts coming in from a flute or chimney chase and caulk gaps that are near pipes.

If a Pipe Freezes

  • If a faucet or pipe inside your house freezes, you can thaw it using a good hair dryer. (For safety purposes, avoid operating a hair dryer around standing water.)
  • To thaw a frozen pipe, heat water on the stove, soak towels in the hot water and wrap them around cold sections of the pipes.

Piles up SNOW

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Snow Melting

The image of snow piled up against a house, or a gutter blocked with ice is not a common warning sign for homeowners. However if you have a basement or a crawlspace you are at serious risk for water damage when the temperature rises rapidly after a big storm.

These tips can help you keep melting snow from damaging your home.

Before the warm weather comes –

  • Keep the perimeter of your house clear of snow and ice. This snow sitting against the foundation will slowly get into the concrete and expand when cold weather comes again. Slowly creating little pathways that may lead to the inside of your house.
  • Shovel out window wells and vents. Water will find a way into any opening or crack; these are natural spots for a leak to occur. If you have covers over egress windows, clear them off as snow will start to get very heavy as it melts.

When the weather gets warm

  • Clear out ice jams in gutters.  When water overflows out of the gutter it can run down the side of your house and into any penetration or seam that isn’t sealed.  Keeping the water in the gutter is a safer bet. If the jam is at the top of the downspout, be sure you can safely reach the gutters to clear them out.
  • Keep walkways clear of ice. As the snow melts, it will likely move onto areas you have previously cleared off. As it freezes again, it will create a sheet of ice almost as well as a Zamboni machine. You can use a number of tools including salt, sand, de-icer or even just a shovel or ice scraper. Keep in mind salts and de-icers can damage your concrete if left to melt on the surface, and they may contain chemicals that may be harmful to grass, plants, or pets.
  • Keep a close eye. Be sure you are watching for signs in areas that could be damaged. These signs can include a damp smell, wet carpet, walls that are peeling or bowing, or a dripping sound in exterior walls.

After the weather warms up

  • Pay attention to what your house tells you. After the snow has cleared and you are getting ready for spring projects, you can still be at risk for water damage. The freezing and thawing may cause breaks to your water or sprinkler lines. If you have any loss in pressure you should get it looked at.
  • Look for signs of problems that can be fixed. Water damage can take a while to become visible, so watch for signs that will help you prepare for next winter.
    • Do you need to add a downspout where the gutter overflows?
    • Should you add extensions to your downspouts to get water away from the house?
    • Is there siding damage next to an area where the water drips?

Snow Storm

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Snow Storm Midland Texas

Now that it is winter here in Midland Texas, we must remember how to prepare for a winter storm. All winter long we get warnings of impending snow. Whether we enjoy the winter season or not, we must be ready at any time for a large amount of snow fall, ice storms, or well below freezing weather.

As for any type of impending storm it is suggested to have enough food and water for everyone who lives in the home to last at least three days. The recommended amount of water per person is 3 gallons. The food should be food that doesn’t need to be cooked or refrigerated. It is also suggested that you have a radio that runs on batteries so you can get updates on what is happening even if the power goes out. Additionally, extra batteries, flashlights and candles should be on hand. If you have a fire place, ensure that the chimney has been cleaned and inspected and that you have wood available. A fireplace, kerosene heaters can be used as alternative heat sources.

There are specific things that can be done right before a winter storm hits. You should fill your gas tank to ensure you have enough gas should you get stuck while traveling. Put blankets and additional winter gear in your car. If possible, you should avoid driving during a winter storm. This will lessen the traffic on the roads and the chance of getting stuck or in an accident.

Check your shovels and snow rakes and put them somewhere that is easily assessable. It is important to keep a shoveled path into your home. Should an emergency arise where emergency responders need to come to the home, it’s important for them to have easy access. Spraying your shovel with WD-40 will stop the snow from sticking to your shovel.

Make sure your cell phones and other electronics are charged and ready for use.

During the storm, should temperatures dip below freezing you should turn all faucets in your home on so they are slowly dripping. This will help keep pipes from freezing, which could save you in the long run from having to clean up water damage. Leaving the cabinet doors open will help your pipes stay warmer. Wrapping towels or newspaper around your pipes to help insulate them should you lose the ability to heat your home.

Ice Storm

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Ice Storm Midland Texas

The ice from ice storms can accumulate on branches, electrical wires, and other structures.  If you need to go outside after ice has accumulated, pay attention to branches or wires that can collapse under the ice that has been accumulated.  Stay on guard because large chunks of ice can fall from roofs.

Never touch electrical wires.  A hanging wire can still be live with current and can electrocute you.  Keep in mind that ice, branches, and electrical wires can continue to fall several hours after the precipitation ends.

Remember that freezing rain, even in small quantities, can make roads very slippery.  It is a good idea to avoid driving during freezing rain and for several hours after the storm, in order to allow maintenance teams time to spread sand and salt on the icy roads.

The quick onset of an ice storm, coupled with the risk of a blizzard increased the possibility of extreme hypothermia.  If you have a farm, quickly shelter your animals and make sure to supply them with food.  Often, during an ice storm and immediately after, feed is temporarily inaccessible.  Animals’ reactions are similar during an ice storm and blizzards.

With a forecast threatening more freezing rain, and with two months of winter left to go, it's a good idea to prepare both your home and family for whatever may arise.

The following winter storm home-preparation suggestions may be helpful:

  • Make sure flashlights and battery-powered radios are working, and keep extra batteries, candles and matches on hand.
  • Unplug sensitive appliances such as the TV, VCR, computer and microwave. If the power goes off, turn off all major electrical appliances.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. If you lose power, frozen food will generally keep for 48 hours. Discard perishable food that has been at 40 degrees for more than two hours. Odor or appearance is not an indicator that food is safe. When in doubt, throw it out.
  • If you use an emergency-heating source such as a wood stove, kerosene heater or fireplace, keep fuels away from the flames and ventilate properly. Never leave a fire unattended.
  • If it seems likely that your home will be without heat for several days, drain your water pipes.

If you use a generator, read all the instructions that accompany it and be aware of the hazards that come with misuse. Use a qualified electrician to connect a generator to the house wiring. Never run a gasoline-powered generator in the house-the fumes are deadly.

Since there is no way to prevent nature's winter storms, being prepared in your best defense:

  • Create a family disaster plan and practice it regularly.
  • Learn and teach others in your family how to turn off electricity, gas and water.
  • Store extra blankets and warm clothes where you can find them easily. Layer winter clothing to trap body heat.
  • Keep emergency telephone numbers with you.
  • Have a first aid kit on hand.
  • Stock up on drinking water and canned or dried foods. Be sure to include a non-electric can opener with your supplies.
  • Have at least a week's supply of prescription medications on hand.
  • Fill your car with gasoline.
  • Have cash available.

Even when the winter storm is over, keep a disaster supply kit assembled and replace food, water and other time-sensitive items twice a year. Remember to replenish your kits when the clocks are reset in spring and fall.

Microbial Growth

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Microbial Growth Midland Texas

Mold is found under the fungi classification. It is a soft green or at times grey growth which develops on objects or old food left for a lengthy period in warm, wet air. It can be found in outdoor and indoor places, thus, it is important for the indoor humidity to be kept below forty-five percent because a higher humidity supports the growth of this class of fungus. Floods and high humidity levels often lead to microbial growth and fungus. Microbial growth can be present in an area, but that does not classify it as mold. The most efficient method of controlling microbial growth is by the moderation of temperature. When the temperature is lowered, the rate of microbial growth decreases rapidly.
Mold and mildew are two fungi that people often tend to confuse. Mildew appears to be powdery and white in color then later turns to brown, black or yellow. The other fungus seems fuzzy but can appear in similar colors as the mildew. Mildew damages crops while molds damage the structural foundations of homes. Both fungi are usually accompanied by a musty odor which can lead to more health issues. It likes to thrive in moisturized areas and grows quickly into colonies with water exposure. These colonies are responsible for the production of irritants and allergens that affect the health of people.

For mitigation of molds to take place, all sources of moisture and water need to be addressed otherwise it may regrow. The first step is to remove all traces of moldy growth immediately. Five fundamental principles must be applied by homeowners and employers to ensure successful mitigation of this fungus. They should focus on the source and moisture removal, safety, contamination control and assessment. Proper mitigation is essential once the fungi is removed because areas must be monitored to prevent it from occurring again.

It is important to determine the party that will be in charge of the mold cleanup. An environmental hygienist can determine what treatment can be used for this fungus. These hygienists mitigate the problem by sealing off the affected areas with plastic sheets to stop dispersion of the spores. Fungus should be dealt with by the wearing a face mask with high filtration and neoprene gloves. Once the mold cleanup is finished, the air around it needs to be cleaned using air exchange and scrubbers.

It is essential for the environmental hygienist to have a protective suit because harsh chemicals are used for the mold cleanup. Hard surfaces with moldy growth have to be scrubbed with water and detergent and left to dry completely. Porous materials like carpets and ceiling tiles need to be disposed of by the environmental hygienists if they get moldy. The crevices of these porous materials are prone to mold growth, and painting can only happen once the environmental hygienists complete the mold cleanup otherwise the paint peels off. The correct mitigation strategies need to be employed for effective cleanup..

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Before the Storm Hits

11/10/2017 (Permalink)

Before the Storm

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minuets after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could have blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close wind blinds, shades, or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

What to do during the Storm

11/10/2017 (Permalink)

During the Storm

  • Use a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
  • Avoid contact with corded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords.  Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners.  Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry.  Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open spaces.
  • Avoid contact with anything metal - tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  • If you are not driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park.  Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.

Chimney Soot

11/8/2017 (Permalink)

Fireplace Needs to be Cleaned

It is time again for chimney sweeps and fall weather. Homeowners in the Midland TX area who want to use their fireplaces this winter should prepare now. Chimney sweeps clean the interior of the chimney and point out problems that need attention from roofing specialists, as well as interior defects when they exist.

Midland Texas area homes should have their fireplaces cleaned professionally to eliminate smoke residues and the risk of fire damage. Local chimney sweeps do not perform restoration of the exterior fireplace and mantel area. However, we can perform these and other services to help ensure that your fireplace functions perfectly when you use it and looks beautiful when it is idle.

Cleaning away smoke and soot from your fireplace's interior can expose any defects, which the chimney sweep likely already discussed with you. The mantel can brighten up your room after cleaning, of course, but the reduction in soot and creosote also reduces the number of carcinogens in your home. Even if this substance seems hard to the touch, continual use of your fireplace can heat these areas up and release toxins into the air.

You might be surprised to find out how far the soot from your fireplace can travel in the room. Even though it is not a typical fire that causes damage in a home, fires burnt in the fireplace produce soot, smoke, and ashes. Most of this remains either inside the fireplace or leaves via the chimney, but microscopic amounts steadily escape into your living area each time you use your fireplace. These build up over time on your walls, woodwork, windows, and every other surface in the area.

At SERVPRO of Midland, we want to help homeowners by ensuring their homes are truly clean and safe for every member of their family. To many families, a fireplace is a source of inexpensive heat that helps regulate utility costs during the cold Midland TX nights. We can help you do this safely and with fewer risks to your family and home.

The professional team members at SERVPRO of Midland TX want to help you remain warm this winter while staying safe. Please call us at (432)620-0086 to find out how we can assist you in doing that this winter. We always answer our phone.

The Equipment to get you dried out

11/8/2017 (Permalink)

Dehumidifiers and Air Movers

After the water removal step, your floors and walls may look dry at first glance, but they are still wet to the touch. Most building materials, like drywall and wood, are porous and will retain significant water. The retained water will cause these materials to warp, swell, or break down and can also cause mold damage.

Drying / Dehumidification

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will manipulate temperature and relative humidity to remove the remaining moisture. They use specialized equipment, including industrial air movers and dehumidifiers, to remove water retained by building materials and other hard-to-access moisture. They’ll carefully monitor the progress using moisture meters until the materials return to acceptable drying goals.

  • Use Dehumidification Equipment
  • Use Monitoring Equipment to Track Progress

Monitor Floor and Walls

They check the moisture levels to monitor the drying process.

  • Monitor Floors
  • Monitor Walls

Drying Equipment

  • Industrial-grade dehumidifiers help prevent secondary water damage like swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.
  • High-speed air movers create airflow across walls, carpets, pads, and furniture, which accelerates the evaporation of moisture.

Water Extraction

Extracting Carpets with the right Equipment

Emergency Water Removal

Highly trained technicians will begin the water removal process almost immediately. Depending on the amount of water, they may use powerful submersible pumps in addition to industrial strength, wet/dry vacuums. This step helps to reduce drying time and helps to prevent mold and secondary water damage.

  • Remove Excess Water
  • Use Submersible Pumps and Industrial Wet/Dry Vacuums

Inspect the Carpet Pad and Carpet

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals inspect the carpet and pad and determine if it should be removed to protect the subfloor.

  • Inspect Carpet Pad and Remove If Needed
  • Inspect Carpet and Remove If Needed

Water Removal Equipment

  • Moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.
  • Infrared cameras may be used to find “hidden” water behind walls and ceilings.
  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps are used for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Understanding Mold

11/8/2017 (Permalink)

Mold what should I do

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  •  Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Water Damage in the Work Place

11/6/2017 (Permalink)

We have the power when for Company does not

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Midland TX will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at 432-620-0086 for help.

Cleaning Dryer Vents

10/26/2017 (Permalink)

Don't forget to clean you dryer vents. Build up could cost you more.

According to FEMA, failure to clean home dryers causes 34% of home dryer fires. Home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss and can even cause injury or death.

To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your home, SERVPRO® of Midland can help clean dryer vents and ducts that may have lint buildup. We would use our duct cleaning machine to run through the lines to get them looking new and keep you safe.

Other tips for keeping your dryer vents clean from the National Fire Protection Agency include cleaning the lint filter before and after each load and making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not restricted by snow, a bird’s nest, or other potential obstacles.

For more information on cleaning dryer vents, contact SERVPRO of Midland at 432-620-0086.

Stay safe please.

An Exit Plan, Be Prepared

10/26/2017 (Permalink)

Have an escape route clearly marked and run safety checks to allow new employees to learn them.

Smoke Types and Behavior

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Where there is smoke there is a fire

Behavior of Smoke
A fire loss is very complex because of the unique behavior of smoke. For this reason, it is important to have trained technicians at your Insured’s home. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals know smoke! Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas. Smoke migrates to upper levels of a structure. Smoke flows around plumbing systems, using holes around pipes to go from floor to floor. The type of smoke will greatly affect the restoration process.
Types of Smoke The SERVPRO® Franchise Professional arriving at a fire scene test the smoke to see what type of fire has taken place.
Wet Smoke – Plastics and Rubbers Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore the smoke rises. Smoke Isn’t as Easy as 1, 2, 3… SAMPLE
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire. Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Fuel Oil Soot – Furnace Puff Backs While “puff backs” can create havoc for your Insured, SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly. Other Types – Tear gas, fingerprint powder and fire extinguisher residue. Special loss situations require special care. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals are trained to handle your toughest losses!

Still using the Grill

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Backyard barbecue

We here at SERVPRO know that we are still using the grill since the evening are now getting a little cooler. There is nothing like firing up the grill on a nice cool afternoon and throwing a couple of steaks on with some friends. Did you know that the backyard barbecue can become dangerous if safety precautions aren't considered. Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals want you to have an enjoyable and safe fall. We have a few tips that could help with your safety.

> Propane and carcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors

> The grill should be placed away form the home, deck railings, and out from the under eaves and overhaning branches

> Keep children and pets away from the grill area

> Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup form the grills and in trays below the grill

> Never leave your grill unattended

> When using a charcoal grill, let the coals completely cool before disposing the coals in a metal container

Always enjoy yourself, but always keep an eye on what is going on around you and stay safe.

Water that you don't See

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

It starts out as innocent bath time playfulness, an accidental spill or small leak. Suddenly, water is on the floor, moving towards walls, crevices, and other access points to reach the lowest level of your home. You may feel panic, shock or devastation. You reach for the towels, wet vacuum, mops and fans to clean up the water. The surface water is now dry and the problem is solved. Or, is it? What happened to the water that traveled into the floor, subfloors and walls? Was all the moisture caused by the incident removed? Water intrusion in a home can linger leaving subtle, yet lasting effects if not completely removed from the structure. Homeowners can remove standing water with appropriate precautions to help prevent further damage. But, how do you remove water and moisture in flooring and walls? You are not alone. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are trained in the cleanup and care of your home following a water intrusion. Whether the intrusion occurred from a small incident or a major water event, removing excess moisture can prevent more serious damage such as microbial growth.
